Question

What is the meaning of the 'automatic' setting in Default Layout And Zoom

In the settings below, what is the meaning of the 'automatic' setting, which is the default, for Page Layout and Zoom? The rest of the selections in the pulldowns for these settings seem pretty clear, but the behavior for the 'automatic' setting doesn't seem to be defined anywhere. If it is documented somewhere, could you point/link to the documentation?

Page Display preferences

Default Layout And Zoom

  • Page Layout: Sets the page layout used for scrolling when you first open a document. The default setting is Automatic. The Page Layout setting in File > Properties > Initial View overrides this value.
  • Zoom: Sets the magnification level for PDF documents when they are first opened. The default setting is Automatic. The Magnification setting in File > Properties > Initial View overrides this value.

My basic (and possibly wrong) understanding is that you have 2 locationsto set viewing preferences on opening a pdf.

1 in the software preferences, another in the properties of the file itself.

I always assumed, automatic, meant that the document would revert to the user's software preferences unless the properties are set and override the viewing default, automatically.

there is a hint to that half-way down the page of Viewing PDFs and viewing preferences, Adobe Acrobat

  • Zoom: Sets the magnification level for PDF documents when they are first opened. The default setting is Automatic. The Magnification setting in File > Properties > Initial View overrides this value.
Note:

Two conditions can affect page layout and zoom. 1) Someone has already set an individual PDF to a different initial view in File > Properties. 2) You have the option Restore Last View Settings When Reopening Documents selected in Edit > Preferences > Document category.

I'm grateful for your reply, but I'm not sure it covers all of the cases:

Consider the following case:

Software settings:

      Default Page Layout: Automatic

      Default Zoom: Automatic

Document Properties:

       Page Layout: Default

       Magnification: Default

What happens in this case? Document properties indicate that the default software settings should be used, but default software settings indicate Automatic? Automatic means use the document properties? But these are defined as Default, meaning use the default software settings?

Thanks for the conversation

that's a really good point.

I would suspect that the default-automatic you suggest will get the full width view that seem to be the fall-back option.

You're looking to solve one of the biggest and oldest mysteries in the Acrobat interface.

I'm curious about the answer!
