Question

why would text turn to artifact in Accessible PDF?

I am struggling to figure this out. I have a magazine file built in InDesign CC 2019, with small masthead text on the page with the TOC. I built the table of contents using the TOC tool and it works great - but when I do the Accessibility full check after making it into a PDF, all the TOC plus 2 "mail to:" hyperlinks within the text keep failing the tagged annotation. I finally was able to find the text within the content, though all the text has been turned into artifacts. I have export options that tag the paragraph styles in InDesign as correct H2, H3, paragraph, etc...so I don't understand why Acrobat would think it's an artifact.

Any suggestions? I'm on hold waiting for an Acrobat tech support person, but I was on the phone with them yesterday for several hours for another issue, which they were unable to resolve. I actually figured out the issue on my own.

Did you ever resolve this?

Can you provide a few more details:

  • What tool/app are you using for your "accessibility full check?"
  • What is the exact error message for the failed tagged annotation?
  • Does your checker not reference which elements are failing the check? How did you find them?
  • How do these elements appear listed under the Accessibility tools/Tag Panel?

Your reference to 'annotations' has me wondering maybe the failure is on the link annotation itself. Like missing alt text for the link that might trigger the error. Then again, you mentioned it reads the links as artifacts. That's why I'm curious how they are listed under the Tags panel, if at all.

Have you made edits to the PDF itself after exporting from InDesign? Anything at all, I mean like changing font color, size, style, leader lines, margins, etc., that you might have made directly to the PDF.

I'd still be curious what you've found in that it's been several days since your original post. Hopefully you've made progress. If not, I totally  feel your pain
