"The file you are trying to open is no longer available and cannot be opened"

What is the point of having a 'FILE LISTS, Recent' on the home screen of my Adobe Acrobat Pro DC if it doesn't work?  I click on a file in this list to open it and I get the above message.   Then the name of the file disappears.  The file I'm trying to open is still saved in the same place and was not changed or renamed or moved. 

It's the same when I want to save a file and try to save it into a folder from AAPDC list of recent folders which has not been changed or moved.  I get the following message: "The location you are trying to open is no longer available and cannot be opened."

I've search all morning for a solution.  Thanks for any input or solutions you can provide.  I use a PC running Windows 7 Professional.

After all that, the problem seems to be that the file is located in a folder on my company's shared drive. I'll see if our techies can change permissions ...or I'll just have to live with it.

I see that If the document is saved to my personal drive I am able to click and open from the Acrobat list.  Of course, that's no help to other users of the document.

I've only seen this message come up when the file is truly no longer in that location (e.g. because I opened it from the download directory, but then moved the file to it's new location). If this function is giving you problems with files that are still in their original location, I would - as the first step - try to repair the Acrobat installation. On a Windows system, you can find this function in Acrobat's Help menu.

HI KARL, I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.  I SAW THE PDF ON MY RECENT LIST. I CLICKED ON IT, IT GAVE ME AN ERROR, AND THEN DISAPPEARED.  HOW DO I RECOVER THE FILE?  I AM AN INDIVIDUAL.

If the file is no longer on your system, there is no way to recover it. Just because it was still listed in Acrobat or Reader does not mean that the application "knows" anything about it besides where it used to be. You will haver to resort to your system's backup software (assuming you are running regular backups).

I have exactly the same problem. Files printed by Adobe Printer and filed as PDF files a few days ago can't be opened just now. There was a message prompted by Acrobat, "There was an error while opening this document. The path does not exist." I have no idea where and how the error lies. My PC is running Windows 11.  I pay so much money each year for the Adobe Acrobat DC, and it constantly gives me numerous problems like this one. I wondered if anyone in the Community could offer me a reliable alternative to storing my files in PDF so that I will terminate my subscription to Adobe. There customer services are lousy. Very unsatisfactory.

I had this happen because Adobe couldnt save down edits I made to a PDF and then subsequently wiped the entire flash drive clean. Any advice?

Hope you are doing well. Sorry for the trouble, and the delayed response.

 

Was the flash drive ejected from the computer and then inserted again later? This can change the root directory that your system has configured for the flash drive, and thus the error.

 

Also, wiping the flash drive is something Acrobat has no control or power to do. If the drive was wiped out somehow, will have to do something with how your device handles the drive and file handling operations.

 

Please update the application to the latest version (2024.005.20xxx) and let us know if the issue persists.
