Camera Raw Freezes in Middle of Edit Session

I am also having problems with Camera Raw freezing, but I think under different circumstances. It loads a raw file just fine, it runs at speeds I consider normal, it will open and run Photoshop just fine. I have the latest updates for Photoshop CC, and the latest updates for Win 10. However, at some point in the edit the entire computer will suddenly freeze without warning. It doesn't happen right away, doesn't always happen before I am done and have moved the edit to Photoshop, but I get the feeling it will always freeze if I continue the edit in Camera Raw long enough. Intricate and numerous brush strokes or movements of sliders may increase the likelihood of the problem occurring. It does not happen if I let the computer sit idling with a Camera Raw edit session open. It never happens in Photoshop itself. I ran this same Win 10 / Photoshop setup on the same hardware for a couple of years without any problems. The Camera Raw Freezes started two or three months ago. With so many push-down updates coming to my computer, and the great amount of time that is consumed in Camera Raw sessions trying to create the freeze, I am unable to pinpoint a particular update that may be a culprit. The freezing only occurs on my computer when I am editing with Camera Raw; other application software I may run does not cause freezes.

When the freeze occurs, there is a delay of perhaps 30 seconds and then a Windows blue screen appears saying there was an unrecoverable error and it is collecting information and will reset. It then goes into a reboot. Afterwards, everything about the edit is lost. Photoshop has no memory of even what the name of the file was that had been loaded. The Windows Event Viewer/Applications has no events flagged with red as a fatal error, and the events I do see have no particular meaning to me.

The suggestions I read about in this forum, such as unchecking the graphics processor box in ACR, have no effect on this problem.

Suggetions? Ideas?

In Camera Raw preferences you can set the cache size, I have mine much larger than the default (30 GB). You might clear cache and set a larger value. Also make sure you're not maxing out a disk drive somewhere. Does the problem occur when you host CR from Bridge or from Photoshop, or both?

Also check the Windows 10 System and Application logs, should be able to figure out the last entries just before the crash, by looking at the timestamp.

Richard Southworth, your suggestion that I increase the ACR cache size seems to be the solution. Thank you very much!

My cache was set to 10mb. I increased it to 60mb and although the edits I did this past weekend were not quite as prolonged and involved as some, I did not have one time that ACR froze! I have confidence that the crashes are behind me. I am amazed that the application does not recover more gracefully from a cache overflow, however, so that is definitely something Adobe or Microsoft should look into.

same exact issue here. I thought maybe it was something with iPhone ProRaw files. My computer would crash hard or give me a RED screen of death. I am going to try the cache fix and hope for the best. Also this crash would affect Light Room as well. Super frustrating.

I have the same issue. Whenever, I do any adjustments in ACR 14, my PC freezes. I tried increasing the cache (20gig) as suggested below. It worked once. I tried to edit another photo, and my PC froze again. This is super frustrating! With experiences like this, I wonder why I upgraded. I read elsewhere that I should disable the GPU. I did that and still have the same problem. It was working fine before the upgrade. Why doesn't Adobe provide better support instead of having us do the troubleshooting to resolve an issue like this. Not happy at all!
