Hi

Try this:

In Photoshop go to Preferences > Camera Raw and uncheck Use Graphics Processor. Click OK and reopen camera raw

It might be operating system related.  What OS are you using?

If Mojave, scroll down to Black Squares.

Known issues - Running Photoshop CC on macOS 10.14 Mojave

As far as I know, it does not sound exactly like some of the issues we have associated with Legacy Compositing, but if you are still stuck, you can try checking that in Preferences.
