I'm doing an experiement with my Nikon D500, have switched from fine to where it shoots jpeg and raw. I am going to try and upload the images to elements 11.
Can you good people tell me if it will read raw, or just be a boring black square?

Read the two tables at the above links in conjunction with each other.
The first table says that the D500 was first supported in Camera Raw 9.5.
The second table says that Camera Raw 9.5 was first supported in Elements 14. So Elements 11 will never be able read those Raw files since there will be no more updates for Elements 11.
You have a couple of options:

The easiest way to upgrade is to purchase the upgrade. Don't know what else to say about that. There will be new features, a different interface, compatibility with the latest Camera Raw. I can't tell you much more than that because I haven't used Photoshop Elements in a long, long time. But here is a link where you can find out more:
