None of the Adobe software has been updated to support this new camera yet. It will be necessary to wait until updates are released that have such support. In the meantime it will be necessary to use Nikon software to convert the images and save tiff files that can be used for further scrutiny in Adobe software.

but it is possible that one should completely change workflow, or even stretch it so much that it does not have the compatibility of nikon d850 files with LR yet to date .. by those who test the machine it was better to have a possibly functional version and then a next update. So ask to change the development system and it's okay.

It's simply necessary to wait a little longer until the Lightroom update is released. The camera raw plug-in has no effect on Lightroom. All of the Camera Raw technology is part of the Lightroom program, so Lightroom itself must be updated. In the meantime it's possible for you to use the DNG converter (the standalone version) to create DNG copies that can be used in Lightroom for now. I would expect that there will be an update for Lightroom soon that will eliminate the need to do that.

you understand well and I know that you just need to convert to DNG, but whoever heads the machine and needs to work on large streams of images, even to put it on a hard test, starts to be tedious to have to do this step more, especially when are situations that photos should be shipped in the shortest possible time.

Unfortunately, that is the risk one takes when purchasing the "hot off the press" new camera. You probably understand that support has to be added for each individual camera model. And Nikon isn't the only kid on the block. My guess is that you are only looking at another week or two at the most. Canon users have had this problem in the past as well. If you are under time constraints you have a couple of choices I think. You can use the DNG converter. Or you can use the Nikon software and generate TIF images that you can finish up in Lightroom. I know, it isn't the most convenient. But until the Lightroom update is released you'll have to do that or use an older camera.

I understand the times are long, I have been for more than a month now I am testing the d850 and since I used the update of ACR I used the dng conversion immediately, as I always did with the old developments of the other rooms, i understand everything, i just prefer one more speed between updating acr and lr all over here ..

I'm just curious. What are you expecting any of us to do? Adobe will release their update when they are ready. None of us know when that will be. You can vent all you want, but it is going to change anything and it isn't going to speed anything up. You have a DNG converter. You have  a temporary solution. Coming here to complain just seems to me to slow down your work progress. Seems to me your best solution is to work with what you have and get the work done the best you can until the Lightroom update is released. You will know when the update comes as soon as we do.

True, but it does not work for me. I purchased Adobe's CS6 some time back, my iMac is getting on a bit as well, since I prefer to invest in photographic equipment instead of hardware. I purchased a D850 this weekend and tried it out. However my workflow is stopped dead when I load my images into camera raw, and when I install the Camera Raw 9.12.1 file it crashes on the Mac. So I am not sure what to do.  I am not looking to find another way around this problem, since the flow from camera to print involves Camera Raw first, Photoshop second.

Camera Raw 9.1.1 was the final version which is compatible with CS6. No further Camera Raw updates will ever be available for CS6 meaning Raw files from any digital cameras released after 9.1.1 will not be supported in CS6.

9.12.1 is only compatible with Photoshop CC. So you'll never be able to edit D850 Raw files in CS6.

Using CS6, your only option is to use the free Adobe DNG converter to convert folders of D850 Raw files to DNG format. You then edit the converted DNG files (not the Raw files from the card inside the camera) in CS6.

Hi John, I thought that Adobe's Photoshop CC did not need an update, I loaded a trial version of the program to see how it operates, wonderful version, no doubt about it, however, the Nikon's D850's RAW files do not show previews. You cannot see any thumbnails. You can upload a RAW file into Camera Raw and it works normally.   I may have my information wrong, but I always thought that the Adobe DNG converter cannot pull out all the raw information on a RAW file. I always work on my raw files, first before I open photoshop. In fact I spend less time in photoshop than I do in Camera Raw.  Well, thank's for taking the time to reply, If what you say is true and Adobe do not offer a plug-in for the CS6 suite, I have invested in something that will be useless.  something that was extremely expensive at the time. Having said all this, I really have it in for Nikon, when I purchased my D800E there were additional software to transfer, process, and other aids, with the D850 there was nothing, I know now why.

Gerald.

We are paying customers ($10.00/month). How long should we have to wait to get a simple update to support a Nikon NEF file. This cannot be that difficult to do. You have already done this in ACR. WTH is the problem with Lightroom???

There is way to modify 850 NEFs, so they can be opened by CameraRaw, Lightroom and PS ... even though it's a 'bit' complicated one ...

In the comments to http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2017/09/support-for-the-nikon-d850-and-lightroom.html

on October 1, 2017 at 1:13 pm Roger wrote:

"You can use a free binary editor like HHD Software (Hex Editor Neo > WIN) and change one byte of the string “D850” to “D810”. This will allow both Lightroom and Photoshop to open the D850 RAW files."

Use e.g. iHex for Mac ...

Open a NEF-file in the hex editor and change the following strings (in the left window) like shown below and save.

I didn't try Lightroom, but it works with CameraRaw & PS ...

Maybe someone can help, how this could be done with batch conversion?

The problem is still that one can not integrate camera raw 9.12.1 in Lightroom 6.12. There it seems to be an integrated part, not an a plug in as stated in the support answers to that questions. So the update to LR 6.12 is not the solution.

When will LR 6.12 be updated to 6.12.1 or anything else.

I am not willing to buy the Lightroom CC Abo as it is too expensive as I use it only once in a while as amateur. Not every month.

A serious answer would be appreciated.

We can only hope that there is also a LR 7 stand alone version or an upgrade from LR 6 to LR 7 stand alone. That would mean that we maintain satisfied customers. Otherwise I would switch to another software.

LR 6 users should get a message regarding the upgrade or to switch to the new CC version 7

I do not want to switch to the Abo Model Which is now Lightroom Classic CC paying 140 EUR per year instead of an upgrade for 80 or 90 EUR every 2 or three years. I will not support Adobe's money machine.

If Adobe ist not offering the stand alone Lightroom 7 as an upgrade for LR 6 I will just update LR6 from 6.12 to 6.13 which shall support the D850. That will be then be my last LR. Afterwards I will switch to well known alternative.
