Mail stuck in Spool folder

I don't understand why at least once a week... users email me telling me that the automated emails they should get after using some of my coldfusion apps aren't being received. I look in the cfusionmx7/mail/spool directory of the server, and find all the emails in there... days will go by and they will be stuck in there and i can't get them to leave unless I restart the services on the server machine (apache and cfusion app server). Then they are sent out... this is a pain b/c my app is down and users in the middle have interrupted sessions. I checked the port # and mail server name w/ IT and they say its all fine. Here are more of my settings:
Server port = 25
No backup mail server specified
Maintain connection to mail server = checked
Connection timeout=120 s
Spool Interval=15 s
Mail delivery threads=100
Spool messages for delivery to = Disk
Max # of spooled messages=50,000
Log all messages=Checked
Default CFMail Charset=UTF-8(8-bit unicode transformation format)

It also says "connection verification successful" when i verify the connection (yet the spooled messages never leave unless i restart)... this is driving me CRAZY! someone must be able to help me...
thanks
-Matt

We have the same problem although ours is most likely due to the fact that we are trying to send out 300K+ messages (albeit 2K every 20 minutes).

We haven't found a solution, but we have written a little bit of code to alert us to the problem:

<cfdirectory action="LIST" directory="D:\CFusionMX7\Mail\Spool" name="spool_dir">
<cfif spool_dir.recordcount GE 50000>
<cfmail to="youraddress@yourserver.com"
from="system@yourserver.com"
subject="Mail spooler full on Smith"
server="#EmailServer1#">
Get out the plunger... email is plugged up again.</cfmail>

</cfif>

I should have mentioned that this code fires on a secondary CF & Email server pair. (otherwise the alert message would be queued up behind the traffic jam).

I've had a similar problem in the past but I'm not at that location to look up what I saw in the mail log for errors. If you have access to the CF Admin check off "Log all messages..." if you haven't already. You should see some type of error message saying why it wasn't deliverable and then you can either post that error message here or take it on yourself.
