I recently upgraded my desktop to a new windows 10 system and reinstalled photoshop cs6 by downloading from adobe.com. I have the license key (which is still listed in my adobe account.) When I try to activate, it now says "the activation server is not available at this time." I have 29 days left. Any ideas on how to activate this puppy?

Although CS4, 5 and 6 are on life support, AFAIK the activation servers are NOT dead yet. But finding the necessary updates might be a big challenge. Start budgeting now for new software to go with your new computer.
