I'm sure I was advised by Adobe that I couldn't cancel halfway through, however, I am currently unable to use it and it is an expebse I could do without. Anyone know whether this is possible?

It depends what plan you agreed to pay for. Most people take out the annual, paid monthly, plan. This is - as the name might suggest - a promise to pay for the year. However, for most plans Adobe will generously let you cancel early in exchange for paying a mere half of the rest of the promise. This is called a "cancellation fee".
So, did Adobe say you could not cancel? Or did they actually tell you there was a fee?
