Ability to Format text has stopped

Acrobat X Pro has been working just fine until today.

Suddenly, I cannot format (colore, bold, italics, underline, size, font, etc.) in a text box.

First of all, the "Properties Bar" used to pop up automatically whenever I would create a text box.  ...no more..

Secondly, I read lots of articles in this community about the Properties Bar and learned how to turn it on using Control E.  Great.  Unfortunately the Properties Bar says "No Current Selection" even though the text in the text box is clearly selected.

I've lost half a day of legal work because I can't change in-line comments--created with text boxes-- to "red".

Please help.
