Accessibility settings for reading out buttons in PDF

Hi,

I am facing a total roadblock here and hope someone can help.

I have created a PDF file from Indesign that has some interactive buttons in it and I can't get the screen reader to read them out aloud in the final PDF. Can anyone lend any expertise here or suggest an alternative way to build them.

Hi Gavin

Hope you are doing well and sorry for the trouble. As described you want to read PDF form fields out loud.

Please try the steps below and see if that works for you:

1. In the Reading panel of the Preferences dialog box, select Read Form Fields in the Read Out Loud Options section.
2. In the PDF form, press Tab to select the first form field.
3. Make entries and selections as needed, and then press Tab to move to the next field, repeating this step until the form is completed. Acrobat reads the state of selected check boxes and radio buttons.

The interactive buttons should have Names and Descriptions (tool tips). These are what the screen reader is looking for. If you have access to the InDesign source you will want to edit those properties. Also, understand that Adobe Read Aloud is not a valid Screen Reader it is considered a Text to Speech reader and may not read all info as desired. You will want to test with NVDA or JAWS which are the two accepted standards for screen readers today. If you do not have access to the source you can right click on a button in acrobat while in Edit mode and access the buton properties and fill in the appropriate values as well.
