Acrobat Crashes when checkbox of form is filled - and some workarounds

March 2024 version of Acrobat on Windows 11.

Similar crashes have been reported in this community, but this one adds an interesting hint to the cause.

  • Make sure that Adobe Reader is not open
  • Open the form by double-clicking
  • Immediately click one of the checkboxes (do not move the form!)
  • Adobe Reader crashes and leaves a message in Windows Event viewer that is not helpful

Easy Workarounds - no crash after one of these:

  • Move or resize the Acrobat window before clicking the checkbox
  • Have Acrobat open before double-clicking
  • Open the file from "recently used" list

Hi there

Hope you are doing well and sorry to hear that

Is this an issue with a particular PDF file or with all the PDFs? Please try with a different PDF file and check. If the file is stored on a shared network/drive please download it to your computer locally and then try again.

What is the version of the Acrobat DC you are using? To check the version go to Help > About Acrobat and make sure you have the recent version 24.01.206XX installed. Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

Also try to repair the installation from the help menu (Win Only) and see if that works.

Let us know how it goes.

  • Version is as requested, 2 times uninstalled/reinstalled, no change
  • No change if installed locally or network
  • File has JavaScript to compute sum of fields
  • Was generated from a template modified by itext7, Version 8
  • JavaScript/itext7 different forms show same effect
  • Once "tricked by resize", everything works as requested

And it would be helpful if someone would try the attached example - which nobody mentioned up to now.
