Acrobat DC 64-bit update causing Windows server 2016 issues

New Here ,

Hi,

I've been having issues since last Friday with Reader DC auto-update installing the 64-bit version on my Server 2016 Citrix pool. It's causing multiple issues (Acrobat intermittently won't open, email preview doesn't work, protected mode error on startup). The 32-bit version works without issue.

My problem is the 64-bit version keeps installing via auto update. Can anyone confirm the correct way to disable this? I've tried setting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Adobe\Adobe ARM\Legacy\Reader\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-AC0F074E4100} to 0 but the 64-bit version still installs.

Also, how can i report this to Adobe?

If it's helpful for anyone in the future, i believe Reader DC 64-bit version 21.007.20091 can cause the following issues in a shared desktop (Citrix, Windows RDS) environment.

  • Reader DC 64-bit version 21.007.20091 won't open, Acrobat.exe processes running in Task Manager - Please check here: https://support.citrix.com/article/CTX107825
  • Outlook PDF preview not working, "This file cannot be previewed because there is no previewer installed". Reader DC 64-bit version 21.007.20091 removes the PDF preview handler. The 32-bit version does not, i suspect this is relevent if you're running 32-bit MS Office which a lot of people still are. Adobe developers, did you test this?
  • "Adobe reader cannot open in protected mode due to an incompatibility with your system configuration". This message also appears when opening Reader DC 64-bit version 21.007.20091. As above, the 32-bit version works fine.

The fix for me was to install the 32-bit version which works without issue, the next problem i faced however is the update service continually deployed 64-bit version 21.007.20091 which caused continual problems for 3 separate customers. The only way i've found to resolve this is to disable Acrobat update scheduled task, disable Acrobat update Windows service,
Added HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\DC\FeatureLockDown - dword 32bit bUpdater 0.

Cheers for the heads up on your work around, & are having exactly the same issue (x64 install alongside x32 + no preview) for up to 6K users!!

I will try this task workaround, but Adobe really need to fix this issue ASAP!

Cheers
John.

LATEST

In my environment, I have a package x32 client using a TRUSTED version of the Acrobat Reader, & the reg key change will then stop any future updates being applied to Reader, via the daily sheduled task in Windows.

Dear user, the fixes for this issue have been applied in the latest release so that Reader will not upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit machines on Sever OS machines.

You can get the latest version of 32-bit Reader from:

Gauranja, we have not found that this is the case, we had one of our servers receive an update last night and it downloaded the 64bit version.  This has been a nightmare for us. Adobe PLEASE FIX ASAP!....I will use the workaround posted above thank you for posting 🙂
