Thanks!

Hi all,
I had troubles with the same as discussed in this thread. I was successful with the following:
1. Log in as a Network User
2. Go to /Users/Shared/
3. If you are on an Intel based Mac create a folder in /Users/Shared/ named 9.0_x86 if you are on a Mac that is a G5/G4 create a folder named 9.0_ppc
At this point you should have created either
/Users/Shared/9.0_x86/
/Users/Shared/9.0_ppc/
4. Go to ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Acrobat/ and trash the 9.0_x86 or 9.0_ppc folder contained within
5. Go to Applications/Utilities/ and open Terminal
6. Enter one of the following into the Terminal
If you are on an Intel based Mac enter
ln -s /Users/Shared/9.0_x86 ~/Library/Application\ Support/Adobe/Acrobat/9.0_x86
If you are on a G5/G4 Mac enter
ln -s /Users/Shared/9.0_ppc ~/Library/Application\ Support/Adobe/Acrobat/9.0_ppc
7. Open up Acrobat 9 and it should work!
Be sure, you had opened Acrobat before at least one time. Otherwise the files are not there. And you have to do this for every network user on every client he/she should work.
Regards and good luck.

I was aware of the possibility to symbolically link folders to get round Adobe's bug. Note: you can automate this if you are using Leopard or Snow Leopard Server via Managed Preferences. However users (read paying customers) should not have to go through such contortions to get round a now very old bug.
For what its worth, there maybe another workaround.
Recently I had to reconfigure all our Network Logins and Network Home Directories so that they are accessed via NFS and not the more usual AFP. This was nothing to do with Adobe software. However it seems that this may have as an unintended side effect, also 'cured' this Adobe Acrobat bug. It would be useful if someone else who has seen this bug, could see whether NFS shared Network Home Directories also cures the problem for them.
Note: If you have your Share holding the Network Home Directories shared by both NFS and AFP, the clients seem to prefer connecting via AFP even if you have set Open Directory to use NFS. Therefore you need to share it only via NFS to ensure NFS is being used. A side effect of using NFS is that the forward slash '/' character is no longer allowed in file or folder names, this is not a big issue as the forward slash should be avoided anyway.

Hi, I had the same issue with acrobat Pro and Reader 9 and network
accounts. I followed the solution of Rene with NRH and i added few
lines in the file "LIclean.hook" to resolve the crash.
then log in as root and navigate to /etc/hooks
Open LIclean.hook with vim for example:
Add lines:
# acrobat Pro and reader 9 crashes
cp -f /Users/$LocalAdminUser/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.
118.registration "$home_loc"/Library/Preferences
cp -f /Users/$LocalAdminUser/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.acrobat.
90.sh.plist "$home_loc"/Library/Preferences
cp -f /Users/$LocalAdminUser/Library/Preferences/
com.adobe.Acrobat.Pro_x86_9.0.plist "$home_loc"/Library/Preferences
cp -f /Users/$LocalAdminUser/Library/Preferences/
com.adobe.Reader_x86_9.0.plist "$home_loc"/Library/Preferences
Most important thing is that the main admin user (UID 501) has
launched these apps and so that files are there.... otherwise this
will not work... and be sure, when you launch acrobat pro or Reader
with the main admin user, that the registration's window doesn't
appear.

We have the same problems. Adobe told us in polite terms to f.off.
Illustrator problems aswell. (make a script that copies the preference files to the users library/preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings) This solves the problem. Illustrator manages to create the folder, but not the files within (way to go adobe)
We are in the process of relocating and are contemplating to stop teaching adobe software. Issues like this does not further adobes cause.

Adobe did no such thing. What they probably told you it was an unsupported configuration. If the software is not designed to run in that environment, there is nothing tech support can do to change how the software is written. You can however suggest a change for the future:

I am not sure if your reply was intended for me or not. However I can assure you that Adobe did specifically fix this bug (working with Network Logins) in Acrobat Pro 8.1 and I know this because I was officially invited by Adobe to be a beta-tester of 8.1 to ensure this bug that I had reported and pursued back then, was fixed. I still have all the email correspondence from Adobe.
Saying Network Logins are not supported is preposterous. It would be no different to saying "Yes we sell Acrobat for Mac, but it is not supported to work on Macs AT ALL". Network Logins are not some esoteric option, they are a standard function, one that has been part of Mac OS X for years and years, and as mentioned, Adobe have previously specifically fixed this problem once before.
The reality is that this bug is even worse in Acrobat Pro 9, than it was for Acrobat Pro 7.0 and 8.0 since you used to be able to at least run the application and now you cannot even do that.

If you'll rephrase you question to Is there any works arounds for Acrobat 9 Crashes when openned on a Network?
I believe several of the Acrobat Regulars may have a workaround.

Another problem for you. Preview works fine now for pdf files on m
desktop folders, but it won't let me open any pdf files from the web.
Safari quits and a box comes up that says it may be due to the
adobeACE plugin ????

IF so then, don't application type just yet.
Next do get info on the acrobat then the reader aplications.
locate a section called plugins click to open Drop down menu. locate ACEPlugin and uncheck. now quit get info. Now attempt to open the document(s) first with acrobat then reader.
If Acrobat or Reader doesn' Crash you have found your problem. Then you need to update both to 9.1.1 and Try with plugin on and then off. If it doesn't crash turn plugin back on. If plugin causes Crash then you need to go acrobat Feed back and put in complaint giving all necessary info.
If you want to be able to view pdf's go to google and type in PDFViewer and if the name Schubert comes up down load that plugin and remove the adobe pdfPlugin
works with Safari, FireFox, SeaMonkey, OmniWeb, Opera, iCab and others. Does not work with IE.
