Acrobat Updater and timing updates

Engaged ,
Jun 09, 2025 Jun 09, 2025

I am happy to have Acrobat updates installed automatically, however, that occurs whenever it occurs, and I have no choice in timing those updates. Acrobat updates often bog down the performance of Acrobat, presenting the lovely and frustrating spinning wheel. It would be an improvement if Acrobat's Updater provided options to time updates to occur while you're sleeping instead of in the middle of your work day.

Is it Windows or MAC?

On Windows, Acrobat Updater does not "spin wheel" and does not start update installation while application and\or application components are being in use. If so happens that application is being launched while update installation is in progress, Updater will present a dialog and application itself will not launch until update installation is finished.

This is a false statement.  Acrobat absolutely will start an update while the application is running.  On a PC.  I was literally editing a .pdf in Acrobast DC just now and an update started without any dialog or permission, thus locking me out of the work I was doing.  Currently stuck in the water becuase this stupid program decided to update in the middle of my workflow.  Adobe needs to get their act together!

Hi @ODuinn

Thanks for your question—it’s a good one. We understand how important it is to have transparency around how and when updates are delivered, especially in environments where timing matters.

For Individual Users:

  • There’s no UI-based setting to control exact timing

  • But you can:

    • Manually check: Help > Check for Updates

    • Defer restart after an update installs silently (until you relaunch)

For Admins / Enterprise Users:

  • You can disable automatic updates and manage updates manually via:

    • Adobe Customization Wizard

    • Registry keys (Windows) or plist files (macOS)

    • Managed deployment tools (SCCM, JAMF, Intune)

As mentioned in the discussion, the installation shouldn't slow down the process, and it doesn't happen while the product is in use.

Please free to let us know if you have further questions.

Thank you for this. Does what you say also apply in all respects to Acrobat in the Mac environment?

Hi @ODuinn,

Thanks for writing back.

The response from Tariq is pretty much applicable for both Windows and Mac.

The help article should cover anything that is missing here in the discussion: https://adobe.ly/4k57cXS.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Souvik.
