Acrobat XI Pro forcing save as new doc after password protection

New Here ,

Hiya!

I've been having this issue and our IT dept has no idea. Could it just be that the software is outdated?

We have XI Pro. When I add a password and then try to save the file I get a message stating:

"The file may be read only, or another user may have it open. Please save the document with a different name or in a different folder.".

I am getting this on every new document I create and need to password protect. The documents are not read only and no one else has them open.

Any ideas? The process of saving the file with a new name, going back deleting the redundant file, then correcting the "new" name is burdensome and wasting a ton of my time every day.

thanks for any suggestions!

Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out.

The issue you're experiencing with Acrobat XI Pro is likely due to compatibility or software limitations, as Acrobat XI Pro is no longer supported by Adobe. End of support means there are no updates, including bug fixes or compatibility improvements, which can lead to challenges with newer operating systems or file types.

Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue:

Verify File Permissions: Ensure the file you're trying to save is not marked as "read-only" in its properties. Right-click the file, select "Properties," and ensure the "Read-only" box is unchecked.

Check Save Location: Try saving the file in a different folder or location. Sometimes, folder permission issues can block changes.

Rename the File: Use a completely different file name when saving to rule out any naming conflicts.

Run as Administrator: Launch Acrobat XI Pro as an administrator. Right-click the program icon and select "Run as administrator."

Consider Upgrading: Since Acrobat XI Pro is outdated, upgrading to Adobe Acrobat DC or Acrobat Reader DC could help avoid such issues, as these versions are actively supported and updated for better performance and compatibility.

Let us know if these steps resolve the issue!

This usually indicates they are zipped. See if you have some other application on your computer that would do that automatically, and disable it.

Thank you so much for your reply.

I think the outdated software is the issue.

Sure, running outdated software on a current OS may create a lot of problems like this. The issue is probably that the answer the OS returns to the program is interpreted badly or that the OS uses now a different mechanism for this operation.

Does this happen only when you add a password to the PDF or everytime you change something in a PDF file?

yes, every time. it is horribly annoying and time-consuming. I have emailed your prior response to my IT department and asked if they plan to upgrade.  If not, it looks like my team and I will just have to deal with it as is.

thanks again! and happy new year 🙂
