So the answer to my issue was...

Removing PDF/A for editing. In Adobe Acrobat select Edit - Preferences - Under Categories column select Documents on the Right go down to PDF/A View Mode - in check box select - Never.

PDF/A is designed to give a minimal feature set to enable long term storage assuming that storage formats will vary in future rendering a full PDF document either partially or totally unreadable.

Acrobat 9 has not been supported for many years. You do not have any options other than to go back to the computer and operating system you had when it was working. Alternatively, get a the current release of Acrobat.

Adobe has announced the end of support for Acrobat 9 and Adobe Reader 9 (released in 1998) as of 26 June 2013, you should consider using a more recent version.

I don't want to pay a monthly subscription for something I use every few months... but thank you for your input!

It's completely understandable. Fortunately, there are many third-party PDF applications out there. I'm sure there is one that can do what you want and need. However, I can't recommend one since I'm on a Mac.

You can still get a "perpetual" license for Acrobat, but that would set you back 500 USD, probably. It makes much more financial sense to subscribe on an intermittent basis (you can cancel it at the end of each month), instead of spending so much money on something you use so little, and that will eventually become outdated.

Either that, or look for a non-Adobe application to do what you need.

From what Try67 said: if you choose to subscribe, DO NOT get the "monthly payment for a year contract." This locks you into "one year." If you try to leave that after several months, you will get penalties and other payments. If you choose to get Acrobat for a month or two at a time, be sure NOT to get a year's contract (which has less expensive "per month" paments.

If you had specified that you wanted to edit PDF/A you would have got the right answer straight away.
