Adobe add on in Chrome does not recognise installed Acrobat X Pro or Reader DC

I have seen variations of this question but none with a resolution.

In Chrome  I have the Adobe Icon that offers "Convert current Web Page...."

When clicked on a drop down offers Adobe Acrobat "Convert to PDF, add to PDF or visit Document Cloud".

This is different to the IE add on which works fine.

Selecting the Convert option results in the following error:

Conversion Failure

A supported version of Acrobat could not be found. Install a free 30-day trial.

I have Adobe Reader DC and Adobe Acrobat X Pro installed, up to date and working in their own right.

HELP please!

Hi Donald

The Chrome extension for Acrobat - Create PDF works only with Acrobat XI and Acrobat DC.

It does not work with Acrobat X or Reader DC.

Thanks

Just tried to download/install Acrobat XI and installer reports "A more functional product installed"

I don't want to use Cloud but I would like to get a Chrome compatible Adobe Reader to create PDF and and use my Acrobat X to work on PDF.

I can only assume that it is my Acrobat X that is preventing me installing Acrobat XI as a reader.

Any thoughts on what to do next?

Cheers;;

Don

Hi Donald

Currently there is no Reader that is compatible with Chrome extension.

You would need to uninstall Acrobat X to be able to use Acrobat XI o your computer.

Thanks

Reader does not make PDF files. It is the version of Acrobat not Reader that matters. You'd need to buy an upgrade, or subscribe to Acrobat DC as licenses for XI are no longer sold.

Thanks but no thanks,  I don't know what Adobe's policy is but there is no way I want to work with a annual fees.

Guess that's me leaving Adobe as I find alternatives.

It's still possible to purchase a perpetual license for Acrobat, but then you won't get any new features that come out for the subscription version.

Still planning to leave Adobe, just finding alternatives.  For God's; sake all want to do is to work on/create PDFs which are now the preffered way of distributing documents.  Not by choice but when the Devil drives.......

I think it is enethical of Adobe to effectively take over the email document format and then milk users to handle them; it's not enough to provide a free reader.

No idea why the font's gone Harpic.

"Taking over email documents"? What are you talking about?

If you don't like Adobe's applications, don't use them. There are plenty of alternatives out there.

You have this completely the wrong way round.

1. Adobe didn't "take over" anything. They invented PDF and were the first to make software to use it.

2. Adobe set it free: they published all the details, then handed over control to an international committee, so anyone can make software to create or read PDFs and give it away or sell it at any price they want.

What you want is a free upgrade: Acrobat (NOT the free Reader) used to be able to make PDF from Chrome. Google changed Chrome so Acrobat didn't work. So Adobe did work to support Chrome again WITH THEIR CURRENT SOFTWARE. They didn't give this free to people with out of date versions, and I strongly believe they SHOULD NOT.

OK folks.  Having passed my biblical "Use By" date I really don't want an argument.

I had no idea that Adobe had given PDF to some amorphous committee, nor do I care.

The fact is that PDF has become an all industry goto for e-documentation and now, if you want to do more than read documents sent to you, you have to pay.

As a private individual in my twighlight years (or should that be zone) I accept that; and have, in fact, paid my dues.

What I object to is being forced to pay again (and again) whether by Adobe or "The Committee".

I use multiple browsers for different aspects of my life and would like to see some commonality accross search engines; PDF handling being one of these. A man must dream!

So, to put this to bed:

I shall continue to use CS5 until it or I disappear from the face of the earth.

I shall continue to do PDF conversion via whatever Acrobat is working with my IE, and possibly Edge and Chrome.

May my faith grant me the serenity to accept the things I can’t change, the courage to change those things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Seasons greetings to you all and may you and yours have a healthy and prosperous New Year
