Adobe Opening document as a list instead of the pdf

When I double click on a pdf file to open it, this screen pops up. Then I have to click on the file again to open it. Also if I close this original tab the newly opened documnet will also close. Seems like the two tabs are connected some how.

Hello and thank you for your response but it is not helpful. Could you provide additional information? I do not know what a portfolio is.
