One of our staff created a PDF file and for some reason it is damaged. I tried to open it with Adobe Acrobat Pro, but no luck. It is a VERY important manual. Any help would be appreciated.

Opening a PDF file in Preview will destroy the original PDF (and a lot of it's features). If all you are interested is the representation on the screen (or on paper), then that might be a viable workaround, but make sure that you are aware of it's dangerous side effects: Preview.app - Killer of PDF Files - KHKonsulting LLC
In case of a PDF file that will not open anyways, the damage to the file may be negligible, but again, you need to know that a lot of more advanced features of your PDF file will no longer be there. It does not miraculously repair your damaged file, it will create something that might look close enough to the original on the surface.

What pdf recovery tools have you used?

It costs money but if the pdf is really important the program is probably worth the cost.
