Hi. Since the last Windows 10 update, when I try to print a PDF with Adobe 8 from either Word or PowerPoint, it prints a Notepad file instead with the error message below. When I print a Word document with Ariel font, it works fine, but not with Calibri, and almost all my files use Calibri. Please anyone help with a solution to this problem. Thanks.

This is a totally different issue and is not a bug. It is intended behaviour.
The message implies that you were attempting to print a PDF file from within either Adobe Acrobat or Reader to Adobe PDF and that the PDF file was in fact protected! Adobe doesn't allow you to remove PDF file protections by “refrying” the PDF by printing to Adobe PDF!

Which fix are you referring to?
Exactly what message did you get when the Distiller failed?
Did you properly set the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance properties to disable the Rely on system fonts only option?

i tried jonathan's fix that so many people had success with:
"I had this same issue and was able to fix the issue by opening Devices and Printers>right-click Adobe PDF>Uncheck "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts"."
as that poster suggested, i unchecked that box in Devices and Printers>right-click Adobe PDF. i just unchecked the box, i am working remotely from a computer issued by employer, so i didn't set any printer driver instance properties myself (i don't even know what that means), i just unchecked the box as another poster suggested and even after "applying" the change and restarting my computer that isn't working.
the notepad error message i am getting is:
"%%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
This PostScript file was created from an encrypted PDF file.
Redistilling encrypted PDF is not permitted.

I used Microsoft print to pdf instead of Adobe PDF, and this allowed me to remove the security protection on the PDF file.

Thank you for this simple workaround. I don't care if it's an intended behavior by Adobe. I just need to print out an email to pdf for my files.

I think it's a windows issue causing this problem. Windows forcing us to use Microsift print instead of using Adobe.

Yepppppp. Wish I found this thread years ago. I do a lot of ordering for work on my personal card and use the Adobe PDF print option from Outlook very often to print receipts for reimbursement. 90% of the time it would work, and the other 10% I would get that Notepad thing. Now works 100% of the time. Thanks!!!

I did this a few weeks ago, but it "undid", maybe an update? However, did it again, and it's working again.
Anyways, on my PC in 2024, the steps are:
Printers and Scanners
Adobe PDF - select (not "right click")
Manage
Printer Properties (left menu)
General Tab
Preferences
Uncheck "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts".
No doubt there are other ways to get to the same place.

OMG, THANK YOU! This started randomly happening to me in 2024 (about 10% of the time). Your instructions took me right there and hopefully, the fix you described will work! It was so annoying the have to go back in and print again (to Microsoft PDF, the second time) instead of just printing to PDF like I asked it to the first time.

THANK YOU! I had been having the same weird problem suddenly. I did resolve the issue using GUEST's cure, with this process, which may have been the long way around, but worked for me) (running Windows 10 on my PC):
I opened the message (in Outlook), clicked FILE, PRINT, selected the printer "Adobe PDF." CLICKED THE Print Options box (below the printer selection box). In the Print pop up box, I clicked the Properties box. This opened the "Adobe PDF Document Properties" dialogue box. Select the tab, "Adobe PDF Settings". Then uncheck the little box at "Rely on system fonts only, do not use document fonts." (Basically, this is telling it to use the document fonts.)
Click OK. Then click Print )or Preview). Then save it per standard routine.
How this even got changed suddenly is beyond me and was so frustrating, so thank goodness for GUEST's fix!

THANK YOU!! This has driven me crazy FOREVER!!! I use emailed receipts from my boss for his expense reports and they are always a challenge to navigate since the recent Notepad unwelcomeness came into play. Your solution to uncheck this one box on on the Adobe PDF "printer" preferences is the perfect solution! 🙌🙌🙌

OMG! This worked for me! My path was a little different to get there, but basically used the Printer Properties for Adobe PDF in my MicroSoft Printer settings. Under Advanced Tab, select Printing Defaults, and it was there. Unchecked it, and it works now! Thank you!! So simple 🙂
