Best PDF size (width x length) for mobile device?

I need to create a printed brochure that is also easily readable on smartphone and other mobile devices. In terms of size, is there a best size (width x length) or aspect ratio for mobile devices?

Can a PDF be optimized in some way to make it easier to view without excessive zooming on a mobile device?

Thanks!

It doesn't really matter. Almost all PDF viewers will scale the file to fit the screen size.

What if I don't want a person to be allowed to scale the document? I'm trying to design a document for mobile so any automated optimization will ruin the design and structure.

You can't decide whether a user is allowed to scale or zoom. Even before you start to consider the countless different apps you'd need to control.

When designing a brochure that needs to be easily readable on both printed material and mobile devices, it's important to consider the aspect ratio and size. Here are some tips:

  1. Aspect Ratio:

    • For printed brochures, standard sizes like 8.5 x 11 inches or 11 x 17 inches are common.
    • For mobile devices, consider a more vertical aspect ratio, as smartphones are typically held in a portrait orientation. A ratio of 9:16 or similar can work well for mobile viewing.
  2. PDF Optimization for Mobile:

    • Ensure the text is legible on smaller screens. Use a readable font size and choose fonts that are clear on both print and digital media.
    • Consider using a single-column layout for the mobile version to make it easier to read on smaller screens.
    • Optimize images for web viewing to reduce file size. High-resolution images may not be necessary for digital display, and reducing file size can help with faster loading times.
    • Add clickable links to make navigation easier on digital versions. Hyperlinks can be easily accessed on mobile devices.
  3. Interactive Features:

    • If possible, consider adding interactive elements to your digital brochure. This could include clickable buttons, image galleries, or embedded videos. Just ensure these elements are mobile-friendly.
  4. Responsive Design:

    • If you're creating a digital version separately, consider a responsive design. This means designing your digital brochure so that it adapts to different screen sizes, providing an optimal viewing experience on various devices.
  5. Testing:

    • Before finalizing your design, test it on various devices to ensure readability and functionality. This includes both print proofs and digital previews on smartphones and tablets.

Remember that while it's possible to create a brochure that works well in both print and digital formats, some compromises might be necessary. Designing with flexibility in mind and testing across different platforms will help you achieve the best results.

Asking for the best size for a PDF is actually a really good question. I will explain it in a simpler way to you; PDFs are device-independent, yes, but imagine opening a PDF in size A4 landscape, designed for printed use, on a mobile phone. Yes, you can open it, but is it easy to read? No. You will have to zoom in a lot to be able to read text. You will see different pages stacked one above another when you open the PDF, also something you should consider if this is something you want. Hope you learned something from this!
