Hi Adobe Community,

I’m working on a project to compile various religious texts, particularly Surah Yaseen from the Quran, into PDF format to improve accessibility. Ensuring these texts are both readable and accessible, especially for users who rely on assistive technologies, is essential.

Given Adobe Acrobat's robust features, I would love to get some advice from this community on the following:

  1. Optimizing Arabic Text: What are the best practices for ensuring Arabic text displays correctly in PDFs? Are there specific fonts or settings in Adobe Acrobat that work best for this?

  2. Accessibility Features: Which Adobe Acrobat tools are most effective for making PDFs accessible? I’m particularly interested in tagging, alt text, and other features that enhance screen reader compatibility.

  3. Quality Preservation: When converting documents to PDF, how can I maintain the highest quality of text and images? Are there specific settings in Adobe Acrobat that I should use to prevent any degradation in quality?

  4. User Experience: Any tips for enhancing the overall user experience when navigating through these religious texts in PDF format?

  5. Multilingual Support: What are the best practices for incorporating multiple languages in a single PDF? We’re including translations and audio versions alongside the original text.

As part of our project, we’ve also developed a website, dedicated to providing accessible versions of Surah Yaseen, including translations, audio, and other resources. Our goal is to create a comprehensive resource for anyone interested in this important text.

Your insights and suggestions would be incredibly valuable to ensure we’re leveraging Adobe Acrobat’s capabilities to their fullest. Thank you for your time and expertise!

Best regards,

Hi @junaid38712242xdqo,

Hope you are doing well. Thanks for writing in!

Please see the response below as per your pointers:

Optimizing Arabic Text in PDFs

  • Fonts: Use fonts that support Arabic characters and ligatures, such as "Arial," "Tahoma," or "Adobe Arabic." These fonts are specifically designed to handle the complexities of Arabic script.
  • Right-to-Left Text Alignment: Ensure the text direction is right-to-left (RTL). In Adobe Acrobat, you can set the reading order in the "Reading Order" tool under the "Accessibility" tab.
  • Ligatures and Diacritics: Ensure the software fully supports Arabic ligatures and diacritics when creating or editing PDFs. For consistent rendering, avoid manual kerning adjustments that might disrupt the flow of Arabic text.

Accessibility Features in Adobe Acrobat

  • Tagging: Use the "Tags" panel to structure the document properly. Ensure that headings, lists, and tables are tagged correctly. This is crucial for screen reader compatibility.
  • Alt Text: Add alternative text to images and non-text content using the "Set Alternate Text" option in the "Accessibility" tools. This helps screen readers convey the meaning of images to users.
  • Reading Order: Use the "Reading Order" tool to verify and adjust the order in which screen readers read content. Ensure that the flow of content is logical and intuitive.
  • Accessibility Checker: Run the built-in "Accessibility Checker" to identify and fix issues hindering the document's accessibility.

Quality Preservation When Converting Documents to PDF

  • Settings: When exporting to PDF, select the "High-Quality Print" preset or adjust the settings manually to ensure that images and text are rendered at the highest resolution. Ensure that "Embed All Fonts" is checked to avoid font substitution issues.
  • Compression: Be cautious with image compression settings. To maintain quality, use lossless compression (like ZIP) for images where possible.
  • Vector Graphics: If your document contains vector graphics, preserve them during the conversion process by using settings that maintain vector data.

Enhancing User Experience in Religious Texts PDFs

  • Navigation: Create a clear and user-friendly structure with bookmarks, a table of contents, and links for easy navigation through the document. This is especially important for lengthy or complex texts.
  • Design Consistency: Maintain a consistent layout and font style throughout the document to enhance readability.
  • Interactive Features: Consider adding interactive elements like links to references or external resources, as well as audio annotations that can provide additional context or explanations.

Multilingual Support in PDFs

  • Fonts: Choose fonts that support all the languages you are including. Adobe fonts like "Noto" are designed for multilingual text and can effectively handle various scripts.
  • Layering: If the PDF allows for different language versions to be toggled on and off, use layers in Acrobat to separate different language texts. This is particularly useful for parallel translations.
  • Clear Layout: Ensure the layout remains clear when multiple languages are presented. Use distinct columns or sections for each language to avoid confusion.
  • Alt Text and Screen Readers: Provide alt text for multilingual content and ensure that screen readers can switch between languages seamlessly.

These steps should help you create PDFs optimized for Arabic text that are fully accessible, high in quality, and user-friendly while also effectively handling multilingual content.

Hope this helps.
