Can form fields in Microsoft Word be kept intact/functional when converting to Adobe PDF?

It appears that when Word forms are converted to PDF the form fields become uneditable in Adobe Acrobat, particularly the drop-down menus. This would prevent someone from making changes to those fields when they open the converted PDF file.

Is there a way around this?
