Downloaded a pdf document to my desktop from internet today.  Will not open, cannot delete, move, copy, or rename. Adobe Acrobat 9 states,... " There was an error opening this document. Rhis file cannot be found".

Tried to delete document using Windows 'safe mode' and wimdows using command prompts. No luck.

Document has a lo-o-ng name...

Hi lvlender

Hope you are doing well and sorry to hear about the trouble you are experiencing.

What happens when you try to delete the PDF file from your computer do you get any error message?

As mentioned you are getting the error 'There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found' there could be many reason for this error like incorrect download of the file, corrupted PDF file etc.  Please try to open the PDF with web browser (Chrome) and see if its opening fine there or not.

Also please try to open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC https://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/  and check.

For more information, please check the help page https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/cant-open-pdf.html

Note: Adobe Acrobat 9 is an old and EOL application, For more info please  check the help page https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/end-support-acrobat-8-reader.html

Regards

Amal

The file will open for viewing only in Google (Chome). Downloaded Adobe Reader as you suggested. Adobe Reader states the file path is too long. Suggests I shorten the file name. The pdf document will not aceept a rename.

I have downloaded a Pdf guidance from HSE website. It has a very long name Slips,Trips and Falls etc, etc. about 40 words. It will not open "file path does not exist". Neither does it delete. Have tried closing Preview Pane and using Shift/Delete but to no avail. It sits on my Lenovo Thinkpad desktop which uses Windows 10. Be glad of a solution if anyone can help

Hi there

Hope you are doing well and sorry for the trouble.

Would you mind sharing the version of the Adobe Acrobat DC you are using? To check the version go to Help > About Acrobat and make sure you have the latest version installed. Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

What happens when you try to shorten the file name?  Please try to shorted the file name and see if that works for you.

Also, please check the suggestions provided in the similar discussion on Microsoft community https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/451d7da6-c727-451e-924f-397eed40822b/cant-open-or-... and see if that helps.

Also, check the correct answer marked in the similar discussion https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat/adobe-file-name-contains-more-than-225-characters/m-p/9854968

Regards

Amal

Shortening the name of the file isn't going to be possible directly. This is not an Acrobat issue, clearly, since it happens in Windows File Explorer. So try and shorten the directory name e.g. rename directory components, move folder to a shorter directory parent.

Above all, watch out for people trying to spam their malware which they call "long file name tool". You may end up in a much much worse position...
