Cannot print multiple pages

I am unable print multiple pages after I upgraded Acrobat 8 Professional. Worked fine with Acrobat 7. I receive a pictwpstops stopped with status 1 message.

G4 iMac
1.5 GByte Ram
Tiger with latest updates
Adobe CS2 with latest updates and Acrobat 8
Brother MFC-5840CN printer with MFC-5840CN CUPS v1.1 PDD / driver (latest available)

I have removed my local fonts, reset printers, reinstalled printer/PDD files, repaired disk permissions to no avail.

Why is this happening and how do I resolve this? This is our proofing printer.

My CUPS debug output is given below.

Is there another vehicle for support.

Every multi-page PDF I have tried to print has only printed the first page. After further analysis I have found the two samples above from the cups log.

You use a multi-function printer as a proofing device? Drivers for these thing are notioriously buggy. Short term solution is to use Preview, or go back to Acrobat 7, or use Print as Image in Acrobat 8

So, what I am reading is it is the CUPS driver. I will contact Brother about the problem.

Will Acrobat 8 reader have the same problem?

I have the same problem since YEARS!! Shortly I upgraded to GHOSTVIEW 8.x with the result that ACROBAT (8 and 7) was no longer able to print ANY page.

Back to GHOSTVIEW 7, ACROBAT prints at least the first page. Isn't it enough?

What a "good" idea to use other software to print out PDF files. It is like buying a Mercedes and only riding a bicycle....

Maybe the problem is ghostview but I do not understand why Adobe is not able to handle this!

mkr,

If you own Acrobat, I'm not sure why you need Ghostview. However, if
introducing ghostview causes problems with Acrobat, why do you think
it is Adobe's problem to fix it. Perhaps you should go to the
Ghostview support and have them fix it, so that it doesn't cause
problems with other people's software.

I have a printer that requires Ghostview as part of its drivers (it is a Minolta Laserprinter, magicolor 5430). I also require Ghostview for the work with LaTeX.

Everything works fine - without Adobe Acrobat. Tell me, why should I ask responsibles of software that works fine? The only application that has problems with printing more than the first page is Acrobat! Even the Apple Preview Application works fine with printing PDF's.

I simply would like to print out more than one page with an application that costs many hundred of dollars, without de-installing all other applications from my system.

You see, I do not have any patience in this topic anymore...

The printer vendor does not understand why I can not print more then one page in Acrobat. They have not given up trying to find out.

Here is the deal:
- Unable to print multiple PDF pages in Acrobat Professional 8
- Able to print multiple PDF pages in all applications including Acrobat Professional 7

Sure seems like an Acrobat Professional 8 problem.

Not the expected behavior for a print service provider using an expensive suite of software (CS2). As anyone can read I am not the only one having this problem.

I need this to work

I guess I should assume that the high-end Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 as part of the CS2 suite can not print multiple pages on certain Mac setups even though Acrobat 7, Preview and any other application can.

Not a good trait of Acrobat 8 or Adobe support.

Barbara,

This is a User to User forum, and we're all users. This isn't Adobe support. I've never had a problem printing multiple pages on my printer. And maybe most of the people who come here don't either. Perhaps you should contact Adobe support.

I just had a thought! It might not be a good one, but one anyway

First go Print and Fax Control Panel in System preferences. and choose your printer as the default printer. Make sure its selected in one of the button s in the control panel shown on screen.

Next open Acrobat. the go to Printer setup and make sure your printer is selected.

Get out of That and choose the document you want to print from Acrobat.

Click on the button pages and copies.

See if there is a button choice for Acrobat.

Open this and poke around. Its possible its set to print page 1 to 1 or Page being Browsed rather Than All document.

Sound similar to a problem with Filemaker I have some times.

I just started having this same problem with the Adobe Reader 7.0.5. It printed the first multi-page document, but then seemed to have a break-down and won't print any pages now. Same "pictwpstops stopped with status 1 message". I don't even have Acrobat.

Ah Ha! Solved my own problem for this one anyway. I was asking Adobe Reader to reverse the order of the pages when it printed. Did not like that! Guess I'll just have to collate myself.

I print multiple pages to a postscript printer all the time: to a Dell
Postscript printer and an ancient HP 5M. The printers have adequate RAM
for their jobs and are true Adobe postscript. To the best of my
knowledge, Xerox printers are true Adobe postscript RIPS, so I don't
think the issue is one related to the RIP.

How are you connected to these printers? I am connected via an ethernet
connection.

I can not print multiple pages from Acrobat 8, too. I've tried several printers, they work normally in all other applications excepted Acrobat 8.

Furthermore I can not print with the option "current view" (might be named differently in english menus) from Acrobat 8. I always get the complete page instead of a shown and wanted page screen view.

Another problem in my Acrobat 8 is that "page information" does not get printed on certain printers. They appear with HP 4600 but do not with OKI 9500 (latest PPD 2.0).

Finally there is one little disturbing feature in Acrobat 8: There does no process bar appear on the screen while the print job ist written to the disk. During this time the Acrobat icon in the Dock shows in the first line of its pulldown menu the "Acrobat is not reacting" in grey letters.

Add me to the list of people who can't print more than 1 page at a time UNLESS I go into Advanced Options and check "Print as Image". This doesn't allow me to print to the full margin of the printer however, which sucks just as bad as not being able to print at all.

How about a patch Adobe?

OK, I've found that using a PDF/X-1a setting has fixed the problem I was encountering. Apparently my printer doesn't want to handle the "High Quality Print" PDF export from InDesign CS3.

> a PDF/X-1a setting has fixed the problem

I still have the problem with more simple kinds of PDF: 150 dpi, no PDFX. I can not print multiple pages.

Furthermore I can not use the option "print screen view" (in german language), both affects the Reader 8 AND the Acrobat 8: it always only prints the first page of the document without any scaling.

Finally I can not use the printer "Adobe PDF": it results in an endless spool action to that printer.

Yesterday Acrobat 8 was deinstalled with the deinstaller. The new installation failed first because of a missing CD. The "AdobeExtendScriptToolkit2.0.1All.dmg" could fix the installation problem.

After successfull re-installation neither before nor after the update to Acrobat 8.1.0 the printing errors mentioned above were solved.

What can we try next?

===
OSX 10.4.10., MacPro1.1, Dual-Core, Intel-Xeon
Creative Suite CS2 and CS3
===

Weird hint: None of our three older G4 (10.4.10, CS3+4, Acrobat 8.1.0) has this printing or any other Acrobat problem. - So, is it even hardware related??

I'll try to address the question about the Adobe PDF print Driver.

If you have both Acrobat 7 and 8 installed. go to Printer Utility and delete all instances there may be two to three instances (depends if you still have Acrobat 6 installed) of Adobe PDF.

Then go into 8.X and go to help menu choose detect & repair uncheck everything except the Adobe PDF Print Driver. See if that correct that problem.
