Cannot print multiple pages

I am unable print multiple pages after I upgraded Acrobat 8 Professional. Worked fine with Acrobat 7. I receive a pictwpstops stopped with status 1 message.

G4 iMac
1.5 GByte Ram
Tiger with latest updates
Adobe CS2 with latest updates and Acrobat 8
Brother MFC-5840CN printer with MFC-5840CN CUPS v1.1 PDD / driver (latest available)

I have removed my local fonts, reset printers, reinstalled printer/PDD files, repaired disk permissions to no avail.

Why is this happening and how do I resolve this? This is our proofing printer.

My CUPS debug output is given below.

I'm also having problems to print PDFs with multiple pages - some work, some don't.

Configuration: MacBook Pro, OSX 10.4.10, Acrobat CS3, HP 2840 MFP connected via network.

Printing only single pages seems to work. The document I'm currently having problems with seems to print with 1up but not with 2up, the latter works without problems when printing from Preview.app.

I would go a step further than Phillip suggests. Try resetting the
entire printer system. It will remove all traces of all printers, but it
will usually get rid anything funky with printing.

After running "PrintSetupRepair" ( http://www.fixamac.net/software/psr5/index.php ) all printers were gone as expected. We reinstalled them. Now Acrobat prints fine again but only to Hardware printers, not to the software-, the "Adobe PDF"-printer.

The "Adobe PDF"-printer - after running "PrintSetupRepair" - appeared via Acrobat/help/repair but still does not work, still it spools for ages without any result.

Any more help?

In some cases you be better off by doing the following. In your regular Print Driver locate the option to "Save as Postscript file, or .PS file.

Then drag and drop on to Distiller.

when using Adobe PDF here is the steps are gone through:

Verify that File is good
Create .PS file
Verify that that file is good
Distiller is called up into action
File is distilled to a PDF
File is verified.
PDF is created and saved.
Hidden .PS file is deleted.

IF at any point in the verify process two additional attempts will be made to to create a verifiable File. is at any point during the verification process anything fails, the process dies and is killed.

By creating your own .PS files you remove all the steps up to creating the PDF file from the >PS file.

If you have a small one or two page PDF to create It doesn't take so long. But if you get up to 50 pages or more then its could an hour or more before everything gets done.

[Some postings appear to got lost with the recent forums update. Never mind.]

We still have the problem with Acrobat 8.1.0 in 10.4.9 that it does not print more than the first page of a PDF.

Furthermore the printer Adobe PDF 8 of Acrobat Professional appears not work: it spools even a simple text file for ages without PDF result. Even under safe boot mode Adobe PDF 8 does not work: on adding that printer the system records a not running service. Rights were repaired before, and PDFs can be written with the system internal PDF printer - so, whats going wrong at all with Adobe PDF 8?

Any ideas for multi page printing and Adobe PDF 8?

I have the same issue. Acrobat Pro 8.1 is misbehaving as described.
So, if you select "all" pages it doesn't work.
If you select "pages" and leave the range as the default (which is all the pages) it doesn't work.
Strangely, if you print separations or print from p2-last page it prints correctly- that is, the entire document.

Mac OS X 10.4.10
Xerox DocuColour 5065 (DocuColor 250 in US) with Fiery RIP.
If anyone from Adobe wants to see any CUPS logs, just let me know!

I have reported this problem to Adobe but since PDFs print to some of my printers then it is, of course, a problem with the HP8550 or Ricoh Aficio 220 - nothing to do with them. But of course HP say that it isn't the printer that's at fault because Preview can print the PDF with no problems and it worked before installing CS3 - so it's software!

I was hoping that somebody at either HP or Adobe would be have the enthusiasm or nous to get involved in actually researching this issue. To go beyond the usual almost flippant stock responses that you get from manufacturer support these days. My guess is that all the good guys have long since left these washed out companies and gone to pastures new. 'Technical Support' these days is just cheap foreign labour with a few troubleshooting charts. Real technical support is probably about as accessible as a Maharishi in Tibet

If you want Adobe to address an issue you need to either contact
technical support via the phone or thru the bug support form:

Cheers Mike, but I have reported it to Adobe Tech Support - their response?

'This is a printer issue as it works fine with other printers'

and they closed the case!

I agree that multiple page PDFs are only a problem with certain printers but that doesn't mean it's the printers' fault. Since Acrobat 7, MS Office, Preview etc. print ok, I'm now convinced that Distiller 8 has changed sufficiently to become incompatible with some otherwise perfectly ok printers.

I have reopened my support case with the feedback from HP and copied in reports such as Jason Cutler's from this forum.

Do these printers support postscript? Are you using a postscript driver?
Have you tried changing drivers? If you are using a postscript driver
and the problem occurs, I would tend to agree with Adobe that the
problem is with HPs clonescript. However (under Windows), i do try to
print with both the drivers that HP provides with their laser printers,
because when I find a file that won't print with one driver, I can
usually get it to work with the other. I must admit that I only have
these type of problems on the Windows side, when printing to an HP
printer. On the Mac, I rarely have problems printing pdfs to hp
printers. Go figuire.

Jean might have mixed up threads: Jean Hanamoto, "how to uninstall" #23, 10 Nov 2007 5:24 pm

But aren't no news to this thread here, indeed? I'm wondering because in the beginning several users posted similar printing problems (a.e. prints first page only) - meanwhile no one seems to be interested in this subject any more. Whereas we still get the described issues. At least we realized they come and go day by day and are not related to certain PDFs.

Meanwhile our service provider (as ACE) has contact to the Adobe Team, they wrote back this "looks like a bug". Still I'm waiting for workarounds/help. A restart of Acrobat or the Macs sometimes work but most does not.

One workaround is Apples' app. Preview - whereas it doesn't offer such variety of printing options like Acrobat which we need for our documents created in scale 1:10: a.e. fit to page, print screen view of large page sizes and others.

I'd appreciate to get more affected users, sorry, to post their problems of that kind in the sake of help or even bugfix.

kind of desperated,
thomas

I have had the same problem with Adobe reader v6, 7 & 8 using Windows PCs. First request for multiple print run produces only one copy, 2nd request to print multiple copies then prints the requested number of copies. I print over a network to a HPLJ2100tn and via a print server to a Brother 9180 MFC. It seems to be a bug. Very annoying, and it appears no one has found a solution.

Meanwhile I got a new computer (G4 dual > G5 intel/dual) with fresh install of everything. It worked fine for some weeks but then it started the topics issue again.

After the computer replacment the printer was replaced: from OKI 9500 to OKI 9630. Unfortunately the printing issue occured again after some weeks: Acrobat 8 prints first page only. (In some cases it printed page 1+2 only, and sometimes it printed after I selected a certain range of pages, like 3 up to 'last page')

either a G4 or G5 uses a Motorola Power PC processor. a Mac Intel machine uses an Intel Processor just exactly like the ones in standard PC's except code to run on UNIX, Mach Kernel, and the Mac Desktop is different (system Bois) All the desktop units with Intel yes the same Xenon chips in high end PC towers that use Xenon.
