Cannot print PDFs through Adobe DC on a Mac

Hi all,

After a long support call I was told that the only way Adobe Acrobat DC can print on a Macintosh was to choose 'print as image.' When I questioned the veracity of this during the support call, I was told unequivocally that if using a macintosh I had no other option to print. I'm coming to the community becasue that seems impossible to me--is it true? Aren't I supposed to be able to print at full resolution in the correct manner with this software?

Using latest verision of Adobe DC and creative cloud. Mac OS 10.14.6.

Before updating creative cloud I was able to print fine, but after updating last week I no longer can print documents through Adobe. When I go to print it flashes in the printer queue and then disappears and nothing prints.

I can print the exact same documents through any other program (preview, safari, chrome, etc). They just wont print through Adobe. I uninstalled and re-installed. I re-installed my printer drivers. I removed and re-added the printer (again, the printer works fine with every other program, and it prints pdfs fine as long as they are not being printed through Adobe).

Printing as image does indeed work...but again, it feels like I'm not actually fixing the issue.

Thanks for any insights!

Hi Habiba,

we are sorry for the trouble and the experience with the assisted support. As described you are not able to print the PDF unless printing as image.

Do you get any error message when you try to print the PDF? If yes, Please share the screenshot of the same for better understanding.

Is this a behavior with a particular PDF file or with all the PDFs? Please try to print a different PDF file and check. If its a file specific issue please share the file with us for testing.

Please make sure you are using the latest version (20.009.20067) for Adobe Acrobat/Reader DC. Go to Help > Check for Updates. Also, please try updating the printer driver and firmware and see if that makes any difference.

As you have already tried most of the troubleshooting without any success. Please try to create a new test user profile with full admin rights or enable the root account in Mac (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204012) and try using the application there and check.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards

Amal

Many thanks for your reply.

--there is no error or warning message. It simply does not print. It will pop up for an instant on the printer queue and then immediateu disappear. When printing from another program the document will appear on the queue and go through the normal ' waiting for printer', 'sending document to printer', 'printing page 1 of x' etc etc

--it is the case for all PDFs. Every pdf I have including the 'welcome to adobe acrobat' pdf will print fine in any other program but will NOT print through adobe.

--I have updated everything and un-installed and reinstalled everything. Adobe reader, creative cloud, printer drivers, and I have removed and re-installed the printer itself through Apple system preferences.

--with the help of adobe support I have indeed tried creating a test profile. It did not help the issue. In the fresh test profile on my computer ever pdf I own prints perfectly fine from any program EXCEPT adobe reader DC.

--to be clear, adobe support told me that this is a problem for all Macintosh computers and that there is no way to print other than printing as an image.

I'm happy to try anything you suggest.

It also is worth noting that PDFs print through Adobe on a different computer with no problem on the same printer.

I encounter the same problem but even I chose "print as image", it's still not coming out from the printer...

Despite I have updated the printer driver the latest.

I attached the screen for your reference...what shall I do in this case besides wait this bug to be fixed?

I think this is a big issue for all users especially students like me...Really wish this can be fixed asap...

I feel your pain! I'm having the same issue. For 95% of everything I print, I can use Preview or Safari - anything excluding Adobe - which is so backwards that I can't even. Unfortunately, the other 5% I print are sewing patterns with multiple sizes on separately layers. If I want to utilize the layer feature, and I absolutely do to avoid tracing the size I need, I *have* to use Reader DC. It's the most maddening experience.

I will say that *sometimes* it does work. There appears to be no rhyme or reason.

I feel the need to chime in and ask why this issue has gone unresolved for son long? It makes my neurotically ordered brain itch.

"that seems impossible to me--is it true?"

Fortunately not!
It would trigger a revolt among all printing professionals.

I have this same exact issue. Every PDF prints using other programs (including Preview in the finder) and every other program prints except for PDFs printed using Adobe.

Hi @RichardJBleicher,

Hope you are doing well. Sorry for your experience with Acrobat!

Are you on the latest version of Acrobat? Please see if you are on version 2024.002.21005.

Also, please let me know the following:

  1. The printer model and driver details are on your end.
  2. How is the printer connected? (IP, name, wired, PCL, PS)
  3. Is this happening for multiple files or some specific files. If specific files, can we get 1 sample file?
  4. How are the files created? This can be checked in PDF Producer field in File-> Document Properties.
  5. Has the issue started appearing recently?
  6. Would you mind sharing a screen recording video of the entire event that happens when you try to print?

Look forward to hearing from you.
