Comments in Acrobat - delete and insert commenting

Hard to explain! But .. my clients send me marked up PDFs, since this update if they have used the delete and insert feature, and it says one comment in the comment bar, if I delete the comment, I get another one underneath which is the delete of the thing I've already deleted and still says one comment in the comment bar. Previously these were combined so you didn't have to do two deletes of the comments. Just one? (basically it says 1 comment, but then it decides it's 2 comments?). It's doubling going through comments.... How do I reload an old version of acrobat to check? Anyone else having this issue? Thank you!

A Delete and Insert comment is actually composed out of two annotations, a Caret and a Strikethrough, grouped together. If you select the comment as it appears in the Comments List panel and click Delete it will remove both.

However, if you click on it on the page it will only select one of the two (depending where you click) and then delete only that one. How are you selecting the comment before deleting it?

Hello! Control click on the annotation on pdf page itself and selecting delete. I tried doing it through comments and it does do as you say - deletes both. But last week I was deleting it by the control click and not having this issue - since an upgrade? Thanks for your help!

I tried it on an older version of Acrobat with or without Ctrl and the results are the same. Clicking the comment on the page selects one annotation. Clicking it in the Comments List selects both. Use the latter.

Ok! Thanks, I haven't changed how I do things, but acrobat has definitely changed, hope it gets fixed at some point... 🙂

The same thing happened to me after the update. At the same time I have the issue of not being able to delete or insert text just by typing. I have to manually click on the tool each time, which wastes a lot of time. I hope they are able to fix this bug quickly!

It sounds like you're dealing with an issue in Adobe Acrobat where deleted comments are not being combined as they used to, and the comment counter is behaving incorrectly (showing one comment but then adding another when you delete it). Here’s a simple solution you can try to address this:

Solution Steps:

  1. Check for Updates or Rollback Acrobat Version:

    • Update Acrobat: Sometimes this issue can be fixed by simply updating to the latest version. Go to Help > Check for Updates and update your Adobe Acrobat to the latest version.
    • Rollback Version: If the issue started after a recent update, you might want to try reverting to an earlier version. You can download older versions of Acrobat from Adobe’s official support page: Adobe Acrobat Downloads. Select an older version and install it to see if it resolves the issue.
  2. Delete All Comments First:

    • Delete Multiple Comments: Instead of deleting individual comments one by one, try selecting all the comments at once by going to the Comments section and using the Select All option. Then delete them in bulk. This might reduce the double-counting issue.
    • Clear All Comments in PDF: If you want to remove all annotations and comments, go to Tools > Comment > Delete All Comments (this might be under the "Comment" toolbar depending on your version).
  3. Workaround with PDF Comparison Tool:

    • If the issue continues, consider using the Compare Files feature in Acrobat (under View > Compare Files) to see the differences between the current version and the original. This will help highlight where the issue is occurring, and you can manually remove redundant comments.
  4. Try Another PDF Viewer:

    • If nothing works in Acrobat, try viewing the file in another PDF viewer (e.g., Foxit Reader or SumatraPDF) to check if the issue persists. Sometimes, Acrobat-specific bugs may not affect other PDF readers.
  5. Clear Acrobat Preferences:

    • If you are still facing issues, try resetting Acrobat preferences to default settings:
      • On Windows, go to Edit > Preferences > General and click on “Reset All Warnings”.
      • On Mac, go to Acrobat > Preferences > General and reset preferences to default.

By trying these steps, you should be able to either fix the issue or find a workaround to avoid the double-deleting process.
