Converting file to PDF version 1.4 or above

Community Beginner ,
Mar 02, 2019 Mar 02, 2019

When trying to send an attached PDF file I get a message that states "We don't support PDF version below 1.4. Please convert your file to version 1.4 or above and try again." Can I get someone to help me in doing this? I am using a Mac computer. Thanks.

What email program are you using under what  OS? Does the email send or is a message letting you know that the program, or OS cannot create an image for you to view the pdf within the message? How did you create the pdf?

I am using aol for email. I have OS X Yosemite version 10.10.5. The pdf was created when I scanned a document to my computer. The document is for identification purposes. It was part of a form I was filling out that asked for some ID and had a place where it said to click to upload an image or document. When I clicked to try and upload the document I had scanned to my computer that was when it gave me a message the read " There was a problem with your request. We don't support PDF version below 1.4. Please convert your file to version 1.4 or above and try again." I cannot figure out how to accomplish this. Thanks.

Do you have Adobe Acrobat? If so, what version?

Yes it is Adobe Acrobat Reader DC version 1.3

Version 1.3 might be the file, not the application. And "Acrobat Reader" is not the same as "Acrobat", despite the confusingly similar names. You can't do it using the free Reader, I'm afraid.

So I would need just Acrobat and have to purchase it, correct?

Best way to convert using Adobe Reader:  Go to File > Print > Select Printer "Microsoft Print to PDF" > Save this version somewhere.  This will override the PDF version and give you the latest version if you have Microsoft Print to PDF installed.

This should be the correct answer -- NOT purchasing Adobe acrobat.

"Best way to convert using Adobe Reader: Go to File > Print > Select Printer "Microsoft Print to PDF" "

Refrying a PDF is always the worst choice.

This did not work for me. The edited document was still marked 1.3. What worked was the TextEdit hack--I just maually changed the 1.3 to 1.4 and I'm golden.

Another way is to open the PDF with a text editor (BBEdit for Mac), replace the "1.3" on the first line with "1.6", and save.
