Create a text field, go to its Properties, and under the Options tab tick the box next to "Comb of ____ characters" and enter "6".

You should use a single text field with the Comb option enabled. That works much better and you won't need to use any scripts for it.

I must be doing something wrong, but when I follow your instructions, all I get is the choice to put in upto 10 characters in the field. I must be doing something wrong or something has changed. I've tried multiple times.

Bit late but you just need to create one text box that goes over the 6 boxes, then check the "comb of" tick box and enter 6 characters.
