Digital Signature Password Unknown

I am going to make this so simple that I HOPE and pray that even the professionals at Adobe can handle this because I'm so frustrated by what I see I could spit nails.

I created a Digital Signature some time ago in Adobe Acrobat Pro (now Pro DC 2018). Because Adobe wanted to plug security holes we are now in the horrible, unenviable position of not being able to either create, modify or delete signatures without the password we used to originally create the bloody signature in the first place. If we forget the signature we're simply out of luck (and that's putting it nicely). Oh well user. Too bad, so sad.

  1. If we go into sign, the password or PIN is required.
  2. If we go into Preferences and attempt to Remove the signature we are prompted for, you guessed it, our password.
  3. If we attempt to  add a new signature we're prompted for, again you guessed it, our password.

The infernal password, once forgotten would appear to be unretrievable and creating another would appear impossible. Great design Adobe.

I've never seen a more senseless, useless, confabulated, worse thought out application feature in my life. And please don't lecture me about wet signatures or standards. Take some ownership here. Either you have the answer or you kick this up to a product owner and they solve it.

Sad, sorry, miserable software architecture. Worse business analysis and non-existent use case analysis. Shame on you.

It's up to the user to remember/store/manage passwords for fundamental reasons. If you could easily retrieve lost passwords, then any malicious attacker could easily do so as well, thereby rendering the feature incapable of providing any meaningful information about document integrity or signature validity (there would be no point to the feature).

However, you can create new digital IDs with new passwords. Is there a problem doing that?

Here we go with another round of ridiculousness. In the above captioned problem I indicated that creating a new password is not possible. Without a new password, creating a new signature is not possible. It's a Catch-22. I'm sorry but the response wasn't very meaningful and the "maliciious attacker" scenario may be all to common but the primary solution: through the baby out with the bath water creates one small problem - the injured baby. In this case to take things one step further it simply is NOT possible to add the new signature without the existing password. I said that above. So is there a problem? YES there's a problem. But not a NEW problem so the above problem is yet UNRESOLVED.

I asked if you can create a new digital ID with a new password. Why isn't that possible?

In order to solve the problem I had to delete the signature blocks from my document, re-add them and choose to create a new signature. Very convoluted. I tried following previous instructions as posted and they weren't very clear. I assimilated two articles and followed the steps in them and had no luck. Creating a new signature within Preferences is not possible. The solution is to delete the existing signatures in the document and re-add, creating a new signature. The question I have though is this: I was not prompted for a new signature, I stored in my Keychain. Now when I wish to use the signature will I be back in the same boat?
