Email hyperlink opens in browser instead of email application

I have created email hyperlinks in InDesign  In the Edit Hyperlink panel, "Link To: Email" is chosen. 

After converting to PDF, the email links try to open in a browser instead of an email application.

In Acrobat Link Properties it says, "Select Action: Open a web link"

"mailto:" is at the beginning of the hyperlink in Acrobat.

How can I get email links in a PDF to open in an email application instead of a browser?

Acrobat uses the default browser for web links.

This is snot a web link. It is an email link.

So how do I change it so that it opens as an email link?
