Ask the client for the password, or for an unsecured copy. There's no other way.

Client claims they did not enter a new password when they saved it.

What application did they use?

Did they digitally sign it?

I believe they were using Adobe Acrobat, and there was no need to digitally sign it so if they did it wasn't because it was required.

The client is not telling the truth. They do not know what they do. Can they open the file?

No, after saving, the file now requires them to use a password. Never had this happen before so they must have done something on their end.

File was encrypted when exported from illustrator as a pdf, I used the "require a password to change security permissions" option. Customer claims they only made simple text changes to the document and saved it, now it requires a password to open.

Requiring a password to "change security permissions" does not encrypt the file. Only securing with a digital certificate will ecrypt the document.

It most likely that something was done on the customers end, but it is concievable that they somehow corrupted the security parameters the so old password isn't any good and Acrobat thinks a password needed for opening.
