Meenakshi,
Thanks for your prompt response. I should have been more specific in my question - I meant the California DMV REAL ID as mandated by Congress and the US Homeland Security Dept. It is my understanding that States, California in my situation, will maintain their own database of certificates for REAL ID and not Homeland Security, and I don't see California in the Adobe Approved Trust List. But I see from the help link you supplied, that I can create a self-signed digital ID in Adobe; and that will suffice for my purposes at this point in time. However, the self-signed digital ID in Adobe may be good for encryption and document modification detection, but identity assurance is not nearly as good as a certificate issued by a government agency, California DMV in my case, which requires application in person and having multiple documentation in hand proving one's identity.

California DMV REAL ID is not a digital certificate, and can't be used as one.

margueritek,
Thanks for the info.
None of the CAs in the US listed in the Adobe Approved Trust List, sell certificate-based digital IDs to individuals; they serve federal agencies or large corporations or organizations. It appears, to me anyway, that individuals who want a certificate-based digital ID that goes beyond the self-signed type, are just not served. What do you suggest for individuals like me, who want a certificate-based digital ID?

They also sell to the smallest of companies (one person). But it's not clear that anyone sells to individuals, indeed. What would it even mean, how would you prove your individual identity? How would people verify it was you? For individuals, sharing your own digital ID separately is the proof that a later signed document was signed by someone with access to the digital ID.

In Europe, individuals can sign with digital certificates linked to their government-issued ID cards. Not in the US.
