Highlighting Irregularities

Depending upon the PDF, I will get different highlighting results. It will either be a well-formed straight highlight, a highlight created freehand from a cursor dot, or, worst of all, just a blotch of color taking up multiple lines or space on the page. I have tried recognizing the PDF, which doesn't help the highlighting.

The internal structure of the file is malformed. You can solve it by exporting all pages as image files (via File - Save As - Image; use a lossless format, such as PNG, at a high resolution, which can be set under Edit - Preferences - Export from PDF - PNG), and then creating a new PDF file from those images, and running Text Recognition on it.
