Short answer: because you took an annual subscription and one of the conditions you agreed upon are the cancellation terms: when you cancel before the last month of your subscription, you have to pay half of the remaining due as an early cancellation fee.

Too late for you, but good to know for others: Monthly subscriptions are pricier, but do not have the early cancellation fee.
