I am looking to fill a comment shape with a simple cross hatch pattern to  help differentiate between them when printed in black and white. Is there a way to do this now?

Not directly, no. However, it is possible to use a script to replace all Square comments (or any other type) with a button field and then set its icon to an image that contains this pattern. This is a bit tricky to implement, but should be possible.

After the file is printed the buttons can be removed, and the comments restored.
