How can Turn off the 'AI Assistant'?

New Here ,
Jul 16, 2024 Jul 16, 2024

How can I get rid of the horrible 'AI Assisitant' ? I hate, hate, hate, hate eeverything about it. I hate the popups that constantly get in my way every time I open a new PDF, I hate the way it dramatically slows down the application every time I want to just search for something, and I hate that way that it doesn't work at all or provide any value of any form. I just want it gone and never, ever, ever, ever, under any circumstances want it to be there getting in the way of every simple thing I want to do.  Please, please, please, please: how can I make it just go away? I just want to open and look at a PDF for heavens sake, I don't need any of this AI nonsense.

Hi @Edwin38637954oaar,

You can follow the suggestions from this help page: https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/disable-generative-ai.html

This can be done from the App Preferences:

  • Launch Acrobat.
  • Hamburger Icon(New Acrobat) or Edit > Preferences
  • Generative Ai
  • Uncheck - "Enable generate AI feature in Acrobat"
  • Click Ok.
  • Re-launch Acrobat.

Let us know if you have further questions.

Strange... I have windows 11 and I got rid all the AI crap when I finally found the Disable New Reader option under the hamburger menu and clicked on it. I have been happy ever since because I no longer have it asking to "summerize" the document or anything. Now I am not signed into an adobe account and don't pay for any additional services including AI. I don't know if people that are signed into their Adobe account have to do something else within their account setup on Adobe. I only need and use basic Adobe Reader services and want nothing more from them and that is what I have.

Try uninstalling Adobe and download just the basic reader and then use that Disable New Version option. Other than that, I am not an Adobe employee and can't really help you

Sadly I have done all that and it still doesn't work properly and slows down my work. I think I'm going to have to find another free pdf reader. This version has been very time consuming and counterproductive.

Sorry... but I don't have a MAC to advise you on that. Maybe if someone from Adobe was here, they could provide information about this on a MAC. But I am not going to stop helping people because I can't help MAC people too....

Tone is COMPLETELY understandable.  We are using Acrobat for business.  We don't need controls popping up and blocking our work if our mouse pointer wanders into the wrong neighborhood.  This has never once helped my workflow.  I getcha.

If the AI assistant is not available, then no one would be asking how to disable it would they?  Your answer makes no logical sense.

Finally, after all the responses to uncheck the AI features which doesn't work, Disabling the New Acrobat seems to have finally removed that annoying button from the screen. Now if all of the people at Adobe would just tell people this and stop referring to the stupid Generative AI checkbox to turn it off because it doesn't do crap!

This still doesn't stop the annoying pop-ups (and ALWAYS right in the middle of whatever you're doing so you can't see anything). This is off on my Acrobat account and it's still being foisted on me. How do you disable this COMPLETELY?

If you scroll to replies from June, you'll see mine that states: "If you have the free version of Reader, then you can revert back to the previous version of it. Try going into the View menu and select from the drop down, "Disable new Acrobat". Adobe will automatically restart.
The AI thing that appears in the upper right corner should disappear after that."

Also, fyi: I'm using the free version and I have MacOS.

Have you tried looking in the Home tab... with the house. In Apple, that might be where the Disable New Version is located and when you click on it, that home tab will probably disappear as it goes back to the last version.

I see where the disable new acrobat is. I click on it. Tells me to restart the app. I've done that. I've even restarted the computer. I've uninstalled the app searched for hidden files and I have reinstalled it. Still no help at all. I have been able to get rid of generative AI but that only occasionally works. It's still tedious to zoom. Pan works backwards and I always have to click off the tools button.

It is off. But the AI Assistant tries to get me to use it but interferring in what I'm doing.

A "Don't bug me" option is needed for the AI.

I have disabled/removed the ridculous AI Assistant no less than 3 times, but it keeps showing back up. How do we permanently remove it? Don't want it. Don't need it. Don't want to see it.

In all fairness, Adobe did provide one option for me on this: In the upper left corner of Acrobat Reader, select the MENU (3 horizontal lines). From the drop down menu, select DISABLE NEW ACROBAT READER. This made the artificial idiot button (and other features I presume) go away... for now.

Thank you! This was exactly the answer I needed. The Generative AI was already switched off, but I was constantly getting pop-ups suggesting I try it out, which were getting in the way and slowing things down. Disabling the new acrobat reader fixed it!

Oh thank you!  I had not realized this was an option, and it now that I've "disabled new acrobat" the user experience is much more tolerable for me.  Really appreciate you pointing this out.

This was what I needed. As a side benefit, it also got rid of the HORRENDOUS hamburger menu where it was almost impossible for me to find anything.
