How do I drag a pdf to desktop on MAC without it opening?

My MacOS Monterey Version 12.6   When I get an Adobe pdf- red icon- I drag it over to my desktop. It used to stay closed and I would drag it over to my email. It always stayed closed with no problem.  Now recently, when I drag the pdf, red icon, over, it opens, stays open, and when I drag it to the email, it looks like a photo. It wont close back up. I'm sorry if I am overexplaining this.  Older and not great with computer but I checked everything I could and I cant fix it. I went thru all of the preferences but saw nothing. Can anyone advise me?

In case you wonder why I care, its my insurance company who won't reimburse me because they refuse to see these pdfs as pdfs. They state they are just pics and they need it in pdf format. Even when these are open, they say pdf at the bottom.  THANKS.

Hi,

Are you talking about the preview, that can be switched off here, but it is a computer specific setting, so any other machine could have it on .

in Finder you can go View -> Show View Options and decheck (if it is checked) the show icon preview.

I tried that. It did not work. They still open when dragged on my mac. Any other options? It’s probably something simple.
