I receive files with password protection. I know the password and open them but don't want to give the password every time I open them, so I want to save the file removing the password. I can always "print to PDF" but this is quite annoying 🙂

In Acrobat, go to File - Properties - Security and select No Security. Enter the password, press Close and then save the file and close it.
The next time you open it you'll not be prompted for a password.

I went there and see "Security Method: Password Security", but there is no place that I can click "no security" or actually change anything. It is completely read-only, even when I go to the "show details" screen.

Sounds like you're using the free Reader. You need Acrobat to be able to do it.

You lost me there. i thought the pdf reader is Acrobat.
I went to the Adobe web site and didn't see any PDF reader you need to pay for. Sounds strange to me to pay for such a simple function.
In any case, I'll just continue to "print to PDF" to get rid of the password. Annoying but works.
Thanks.

Acrobat is the commercial product. It comes as Acrobat Pro (Windows or Mac) or Acrobat Standard (Windows only). Adobe also have the free Acrobat Reader, which is just a reader, and doesn't do this. Yes the name can be confusing. Acrobat Reader can be thought of as a teaser to get people hooked on PDF so they need to buy Acrobat. Subscriptions to Acrobat from $15 per month.
Adobe Acrobat Pro DC: PDF converter, convert PDFs from anywhere.
Note that PDF files often have a second password that you need to quote to actually remove password protection.
