How do I stop the highlight tool from making boxes and creating comments?

Community Beginner ,

I want to highlight the old way and I can’t anymore.  I want to highlight text that has been OCR’ed from a scanned document or other documents containing text.  At one point I was able to do this with some but not all documents.  Now I can’t highlight text the right way, even with documents I had been able to highlight before.

The problem is that when I use the highlight tool, it puts boxes around the highlighted text and makes it into a comment.  All I want is to highlight.  I already know how to make the ‘hate’ example have more opacity.  For example:

Others have posted about this:

If we can’t fix it now, will going back to an older version of Adobe work?

Hi @Mike34987496f9nn

Hope you are doing well and thanks for reaching out.

The highlight text tool can only highlight "real" text. If you have a scanned document or a document in which text was converted to outlines, you cannot use this tool.

Please check the correct answer marked in the similar discussion (https://adobe.ly/3OepWXH) and see if that works for you.

Note: Steps are same for the new version.

If it still doesn't work, please remove the application using the Acrobat cleaner tool https://adobe.ly/4b8sH6y, reboot the computer and reinstall the application using the direct link https://adobe.ly/3SwIUeO;

Amal

This didn't work.  Should I roll back to X or something?

No, I didn't find a solution.  I have been saving to Word and working from there.  When that looks too ugly I do it on paper and scan it.

In Acrobat highlights are comments.

to avoid comment boxes while highlighting, is to open the document after all the highlighting is done in microsoft edge and saving it again gets rid of the comment box.
