How to renumber PDF pages after removing some blank pages?

Participant ,

I'm generating PDF output from RoboHelp 2019 and the document has multiple blank pages. I've deleted them using Organize Pages option, but cannot renumber the pages automatically. I'm trying the "Edit Footer" option, but it gives no footer found. Any solution?

Edit footer is only for footers made in Acrobat. Otherwise, it's just a part of the page. You should not number in the original app. However you could use Redaction in Acrobat Pro to delete the existing numbers, then add new numbers.

Thank you. Do you mean either to edit it manually or to apply numbering from the PDF itself after removing blank pages? Did I get it right?

All I really mean is that, since numbering is easy but getting rid of existing numbers is hard... if you know you are going to be deleting pages ... just do not number in your original app (Robohelp) because it makes more work for you.

The page renumbering routine is in a new(er) place these days.  Go to Organize Pages tools, click on More, and choose Page Labels.  You can manipulate the page numbering for any portion of, or your entire document there.

Except that Page Labels doesn't put visible numbers on pages - which is what I've been assuming is the interesting thing... I may be wrong.

Yes, you're totally right. It doesn't reflect in pages.

Remove the old page numbers with the redaction tool. Then use add header and footer.

Correct.  The numbering system is used in the thumbnail view on the left, and in page navigation to identify on what page you are viewing.  Page numbers on the pages either come from the source document, or are added in the Footer/Headers.

Kindly, and Respectfully, I wish to recommend that Adobe change 'Page Labels' back to 'Page Numbering'.  The dialog box that comes up after selecting 'Page Labels' is still titled 'Page Numbering' (which is helpful, assuring you that you arrived at the right place), and I would make the argument that 'Page Numbering' is way more informative to the user than 'Page Labels'.  When the user wants to reassign page numbering, they will look through the drop down menu intently for the phrase 'Page Numbering', while the misleading phrase 'Page Labels' will sound like something you would apply visibly to each sheet.  I am sure that Adobe is trying to accommodate several different languages, but in American use of the English lanugage, 'Page Numbering' is most appropriate, and apparently in line with the traditional nomenclature that Adobe itself has used historically.

Best Regards,

-Todd

Todd,

I, too, don't like the new verbiage.  It will be interesting to see if it sticks for long.

My best,

Dave
