Hello,

I am unable to open any prior pdf files that have been saved after installing an adobe acrobat on my new computer. It gets the following message.

" Adobe Acrobat could not open " FILE NAME" because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged."  This is hundreds of files 😞

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

Hi there

We hope you are doing well. Thanks for reaching out. We are sorry for the trouble you are experiencing.

To understand the issue better, could you please share a bit more information?

  • Are you using a personal computer or a work device?

  • Did this problem start after a recent update, or has it been happening for a while?

  • Does it happen with all PDF files or just one specific file? Try opening a different PDF and see if the issue still happens.

  • What version of Acrobat are you using?
To check, go to Help > About Acrobat. Please make sure it's updated to the latest version (25.01.20566).
You can update it by going to Help > Check for Updates. After updating, restart your computer and try again.

The error message you’re seeing — "Adobe Acrobat could not open 'FILE NAME' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged" — usually means one of two things

1. The files may have gotten corrupted during the transfer from your old computer to the new one.

2. The files may not actually be PDFs, even if they have a .pdf extension. Sometimes other file types are mistakenly saved or renamed with a .pdf extension.

To help troubleshoot:

  • Have you moved the files from the old to the new computer? If yes, how did you move the files from your old computer to the new one (USB, cloud storage, external hard drive, etc.)?

  • Can you try opening one of these files on your old computer, or send it to a friend/colleague to see if they can open it?

  • You may also try opening the PDF file in a web browser and seeing if it opens fine there.

Let us know how it goes.
