I can't open Acrobat or pdfs

When I try to open Acrobat or a pdf I get the following error message:

"A running instance of Acrobat has caused an error."

I tried all of the fixes Acrobat suggested (except the ones that require access to the software, since I can't open it).  I restarted the computer twice, I checked Task Manager, and there is nothing listed for Acrobat.

And it's Monday.  Ugh.

Thank you! I figured it out. There was a process item in the Task Manager
that wasn't named Acrobat that was the problem. Thank you so much for
leading me there.

Would you mind sharing a screenshot of the task manager, and also from the Startup Programs tab?

If you disconnect the computer from the Internet, would it pop the same error if you're completely offline?

Hi @Ruth35531961wd51 ,

If you are using Microsoft Windows.

I will assume that you're on Windows 10 or 11.

Exit every program and restart your computer.

If the problem pops up again after rebooting your computer go to Help =>> Repair Installation.

NOTE:

You may also want to make sure that Adobe Acrobat is set as the default PDF handler on Microsoft Windows, not Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft Edge is the default file viewer, web brower and PDF viewer on Microsoft Windows 10 and 11.

The error that you are getting could be linked to a PDF file that was opened in Microsoft Edge, for example, and was left opened in the background while trying to access the same file with Adobe Acrobat (but I may be totally wrong... just guessing).

Can you verify if this is the issue?
