They do print to PDF via the MSFT driver -- I've looked at the Acrobat settings but can't find any reason why the fonts would drop out. Any ideas?

Are you able to confirm if these ttf's are non-free?
Maybe they have copyright restrictions that prohibit embedding them unless they're purchased (just guessing here).

Thank you -- good thought, I will check with my design guy

Some questions to help us diagnose the problem:
1. What are the names of the fonts that are not working?
2. Are you making the PDF from MS Word, or some other program?
3. If from Word, which method are you using to make the PDF?
4. What version and build of Acrobat do you have installed? Check under File / About Adobe Acrobat.
5. What version of Adobe PDF Maker is being used?

1. Montserrat-VariableFont_wght.ttf -- however, when installing on PC it only seems to recognize Montserrat Thin? see screenshot. In Word, the weight is set to regular or bold. In both cases, Acrobat is substituting what looks like Montserrat Thin.
2. Yes, MS Word 365 Pro desktop on a PC.
3. I have tried all 3 methods to generate a PDF. With the Word driver, it drops the https hyperlinks in the document (but not the mailto: links) and the font is correct. In Adobe PDF whether using Export or the Ribbon button, the hyperlinks all work but the font renders as Thin.
4. Acrobat Pro v 2022.003.20263
5. Adobe PDF Library 22.3.39 // PDF Version: 1.6 (Acrobat 7.x)

Gah! A variable-weight font!
This type of font is very new in the industry and doesn't work well or predictably when the file is exported to PDF or any other file format. Our shop does not recommend their use and probably won't for a couple more years while we wait for technologies, software, and standards to be updated to accomodate variable-weight fonts.
Suggestion: Download and install the traditional family of Montserrat fonts and swap out your variable weights for standard weights. That will probably solve your PDF problems.
https://fonts.adobe.com/fonts/montserrat It comes in a bazillion weights that should meet your design needs.
Caution: whenever any software company, especially Adobe, dangles something shiny, cool, and new in front of us, don't jump on the bandwagon right away. Most of this stuff isn't ready for prime time when they hype it to us.
