Newbie Q: tally column or other calculations

Hi-

I have several pdf forms I need to set up as fillable pdfs. I'd love it if I could make then perform some calculations such as count of boxes selected from column A vs column B for example. Do I need to recreate the forms from scratch to do this? Can you point me to instructions for the best way to accomplish this?
