I assume there must be a setting for this but I can't find it

I save it to my computer and then open it using Acrobat Reader. But I want to avoid having to save it first and be able open it directly. Currently there doesn't seem to be an option to do this, but previously there was.

Any PDF file you view is saved to the computer, there's no way around that. It can be as a temporary file, though. That is handled by your browser's settings.
