I am using Acrobat Pro to create a PDF form for customer to input some information and there is a barcode form field at the end of the form. When customer finish the input, I want to dynamic generate the barcode based on the customer inputted information and print out all the information including the dynamic barcode.

When I test the PDF form, it works on my PC. But when I test in other PC which only have the PDF free reader installed, the barcode field turns in gray color.

I have make some search in the internet, it seems the only solution is to apply the “LiveCycle - Reader Extension” to the PDF.

My question is:

  1. Is it the “LiveCycle - Reader Extension” module the only solution to solve my problem?
  2. If I purchase the “LiveCycle Reader Extension” module, is it mean that I need to purchase LiveCycle ES4 server first?
  3. What else I need to purchase?

Best regards,

Felix

Hi Felixy,

The form needs to be reader extended through LiveCycle RE for paper form Barcodes to work in Adobe Reader.

The Reader Extensions function in Acrobat Professional does not include enabling an interactive PDF form for the PaperFormsBarcode object.

The barcode turns grey in Reader because the form does not have the barcode right. On the other hand, any version of Acrobat provides barcode encoding. If you want to distribute a barcoded form for Reader clients, you must use LiveCycle Reader Ex

Acrobat Reader cannot create a barcode nor a QRCode, this requires Acrobat Pro or Acrobat Standard.

That's not true. It can create a 1D barcode (using a simple text field and the appropriate font), or even a 2D barcode (including QR Code) if the special right mentioned above is applied to the document. I don't have answers to those questions, but I do know that it is a very expensive application. We're talking 5 or 6 figures, most likely. So you should really consider if this is something worth your time (and money), before pursuing it any further.

My guesses would be:

1. Yes

2. No

3. Nothing else

Sorry, I meant: Acrobat Reader cannot create a barcode nor a QRCode using a barcode form field.
